If your conservatory is looking dated, there are many ways you can make it look modern and stylish again – without going to the expense of replacing it completely.

By changing doors, roofs, lighting or adding roof lanterns, you can give your conservatory a makeover that will make it look brand new.

Change your doors

New doors can make a big difference to a conservatory. Swapping your standard patio doors for French doors or bifolding doors can give you more space and a stylish new look.

Bifolding doors are popular because of their space-saving functionality. They’re designed as multiple doors fitted to runners that fold back on themselves. Because they slide and fold, they don’t take up as much space as a normal hinged swing-open door.

Bifold doors are also flexible as you can have a single door entrance when you don’t want to fold and slide open every door in the bifold.

Replace your roof

A common complaint of conservatories is that they’re either too hot or cold. Usually, this is because the roof is made from polycarbonate, thin glass or translucent materials.

Tiled conservatory roofs are lightweight and easy to fit and offer a more robust alternative to a glass or polycarbonate roof.

By changing to a tiled roof, you’ll enhance thermal performance, making the room cooler in summer and warmer in winter. This will help to save energy and reduce your heating bills.
You’ll also improve sound insulation, so you won’t hear the rain drumming on the roof.

If you prefer a glass roof, you could switch to energy-efficient glazing. Low-emissivity glazed roofing offers the latest technology in glass. It will insulate your conservatory and prevent it from overheating in direct sunlight.

Alternatively, you could have the best of both worlds with a hybrid roof made from aluminium and glass. This will give you plenty of natural light.

Modernise your lighting

Your conservatory can still be a comfortable place to relax in the evenings if you fit ambient lighting.

In a traditional setting, a pendant light can be suspended from the ceiling. This could be pulled down or raised and be on a dimmer switch to allow for different levels of light.

Recessed spotlights along your ceiling beams can create a pleasant overhead glow, or you can direct them to particular spots in the room. Low lighting, as in height and brightness, can add an extra layer of light. This may be a lamp that can be used for reading.

Install a roof lantern

Roof lanterns bring natural light and volume to a conservatory. Unlike a flat surface, they can channel light from all angles.

There are many different styles to choose from such as square, pyramid, octagonal, or a traditional double hipped roof lantern. Any of these options will bring an eye-catching feature to your conservatory.

Roof lanterns are available in a range of finishes and colours, so you’ll be able to find one to suit your style of conservatory.
